  1. In computing, a collection of data or a
  2. program stored in a computer's external
  3. memory, for example on disc. It might include
  4. anything from information on a firm's
  5. employees to a program for an adventure game.
  6. Serial files hold information as a sequence
  7. of characters, so that, to read any
  8. particular item of data, the program must
  9. read all those that precede it. Random access
  10. files allow the required data to be reached
  11. directly. Files usually consist of a set of
  12. records, each having a number of fields for
  13. specific items of data. For example, the file
  14. for a class of schoolchildren might have five
  15. fields containing each child's family name
  16. (1), first name (2), house name or number
  17. (3), street name (4), and town (5). To find
  18. out which children live in the same street
  19. one would look in field 4.
